City Hall, New York City

In the 1800s, New York City was the capital of The United States. Therefore, New Yorkers wanted to build a special building to attract the people attention and to be ahead of other states such as Philadelphia and Boston which had taller buildings than New York’s.

In order to show democracy, New Yorkers wanted to construct not fancy but an elegant building. They built City Hall during 1803 to1812. At that time City Hill was the tallest building in the New York City even though its only has two floors. This is an historic building where important presidents of the United States served. The first president who worked there was the popular George Washington.

City Hall is where the Mayor, City Councils and Committees work together to make the laws in New York State. This remarkable place is used by immigrants, religious and politicians to make protests about any issues. For example, the war in Iraq, poverty or any important problems in the City.

I recommend you to visit City Hall because there you can learn about politics, art, laws, history and many other subjects. City Hall is open to the public therefore you should go and see how many interesting pieces of history you can find there.

This book illustrates the story of Tommy a nine years old white boy who family’s moved from Upper West Side to East Harlem. Tommy adjustment to his new life became more difficult because these two neighborhoods were completely different. Tommy’s old neighborhood was clean, hash and harmless. And who lived there were middle class, rich and educated white people. However, East Harlem was an unclear, noisy and insecure place. And who lived there were African Americans and Puerto Ricans with low-level of education. The author shows different kinds of issues that were happening at the time. He talks about religion, poverty, African American segregation and racism. He also highly the dreams he had and how he would accomplish them. This book is realistic, informative and at the same time it is comic.

"Trip to Riverside Church"

On July 6, 2006, my classmates and I went to a fabulous trip; we went to see the protestant church called “Riverside Church.”. In the church I learned a lot about the ceremonies that they do and the programs that they have. For instance, I could see some people who were there to get free food. In addition, there they have an educational program which includes English classes and programs for children learning development. Another thing that called my attention was the architecture of the building which has stained glass windows and it was made with similar appearance to European churches. These windows are very attention-grabbing because they have pictures on them and the entire pictures are describing something. For example one has a picture about agriculture and its shows people planting trees and working in a garden. In conclusion, I liked the trip a lot because I had the opportunity to share time with my classmates and during that time I could know them better.
