Flying Over 96th Street by Thomas Webber
This book illustrates the story of Tommy a nine years old white boy who family’s moved from Upper West Side to East Harlem. Tommy adjustment to his new life became more difficult because these two neighborhoods were completely different. Tommy’s old neighborhood was clean, hash and harmless. And who lived there were middle class, rich and educated white people. However, East Harlem was an unclear, noisy and insecure place. And who lived there were African Americans and Puerto Ricans with low-level of education. The author shows different kinds of issues that were happening at the time. He talks about religion, poverty, African American segregation and racism. He also highly the dreams he had and how he would accomplish them. This book is realistic, informative and at the same time it is comic.
